Malaysian oil and gas giant Petronas has confirmed reports that a fire broke out at the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline near Lawas, Sarawak, Malaysia. According to Malaymail.com a man was killed and two others injured in the pipeline explosion.
Petronas confirmed the incident has happened but it did not address reports on the fatality.
"With regret, PETRONAS confirms that a fire incident occurred at the Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) near KP 132, nearby Lawas, Sarawak earlier this afternoon," Petronas said.
"The incident is believed to have involved a third-party contractor performing work unrelated to SSGP operations nearby the pipeline’s Right-of-Way (ROW) area. A police report has been lodged with regard to this incident. To this end, an investigation will commence in earnest," Petronas said.
Petronas said its Emergency Response Team was mobilized to the area.
"The company will work closely with all the relevant authorities to take the necessary action and preventive measures to contain the situation and safeguard the safety of the surrounding community and environment," Petronas said.
The incident comes a little over a month after Petronas declared force majeure on gas supply to MLNG Dua due to a pipeline leak caused by soil movement at the vicinity of KP201, Sabah-Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) that occurred on September 21, 2022.
This had impacted the supply of gas to MLNG Dua’s production facility at PETRONAS LNG Complex (PLC) in Bintulu, Sarawak.
Petronas at the time said that the force majeure affected only the supply of gas to MLNG Dua’s production facility, while the other LNG production facilities within the PLC continued to operate as planned.
