Woodside Books Floatel's Accommodation Rig for Pluto Work

Floatel International, an offshore accommodation services provider, said Friday it had secured a contract with Woodside for the Floatel Triumph semi-submersible accommodation unit.

The Floatel Triumph will provide support to Woodside's Pluto project in Western Australia. The three-month contract is expected to start around April 1, 2023. Woodside will have options to extend the contract further. Floatel International did not share details on the contract value.

The Floatel Triumph, built by Keppel in 2016, is outfitted with the Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning System, which is certified to DP3 class.

It can accommodate 500 people in one and two-bed cabins and has large recreational areas, including mess and day rooms, a gym, an internet café, and a movie theater. Workers can transfer between the floatel and the host installation using the unit's telescoping gangway.

Pluto LNG is a Western Australian LNG plant that consists of an offshore platform and one onshore LNG processing train, fed by gas from the offshore gas fields in W. Australia. 

Back in May, the tenth anniversary of the first LNG produced at Pluto occurred. The project also delivered its 700th cargo in June 2022. 

The sale of LNG and condensate produced at Pluto LNG in the past decade has generated approximately $23 billion in revenue for Woodside, the company said in its first half 2022 results report.

Now, Woodside is working to build a second LNG train (Pluto Train 2), which will facilitate the development of the giant Scarborough gas field located approximately 375 km off the coast of Western Australia. The development will include a floating production unit (FPU), eight wells drilled in the initial phase and 13 wells drilled over the life of the Scarborough field, a trunkline to shore and new onshore infrastructure. 

Expansion of the onshore Pluto LNG facility will include the construction of a second LNG train (Pluto Train 2), associated domestic gas processing facilities and supporting infrastructure and modifications to Pluto Train 1.
