Offshore Wind Conference Set for SUNY Maritime

The Center of Excellence for Offshore Renewable Energy at the State University of New York Maritime College and the Maritime Industry Museum at Fort Schuyler, are hosting the Ocean Wind Energy Conference on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at the Maritime Academic Center, SUNY Maritime College.

Serving as the keynote speaker is Alana Duerr, Ph.D., Director, Offshore Wind North America, DNV GL - Renewables Advisory, who will offer insight to opportunities for maritime industry support of Ocean Wind Energy development and sustainment for many years to come. Subject matter experts and executives from Equinor, EDFRenewables, Vinyard Wind and Ørsted will participate as conference panelists.

“The Maritime Industry Museum and SUNY Maritime College are delighted to host this conference focusing on the development of clean energy, and the creation of maritime jobs in our region,” said Captain Eric Johansson, State University Distinguished Service Professor and Executive Director of the Maritime Industry Museum. “It is estimated that Wind Power Energy support industries will bring over $1.2 billion in new economic activity to New York’s waterfront and beyond.”

Over the past several years, the Federal Government’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has been engaged in the process of planning for wind energy development on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). In the area of shallow waters between Long Island (to the north and east) and the New Jersey coast (to the south and west), referred to by cartographers as the New York Bight, BOEM has plans to lease at least three major tracts for wind energy. These energy projects will advance domestic energy production, generate revenue, and increase job opportunities in the region.

This conference intends to provide an overview of Ocean Wind Power Generation technology while focusing on the development of the support infrastructure and skilled manpower needed to install and sustain the wind power generation projects in our region.

The full-day conference will begin at 9 a.m. and a limited number of free tickets will be offered to students and academicians.
