TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission grid operator, has awarded the oilfield services provider Petrofac work on the Beta high voltage alternate current (HVAC) substation platform in the North Sea for the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) wind farm.

Petrofac was already awarded the contract for HKZ platform Alpha in July 2018 and subsequent confirmation of HKZ platform Beta option.

The HVAC offshore grid connection platform, to be installed in the North Sea, will be operational in 2022. A total of eight 700 megawatts (MW) transformer substations will be installed off the Netherlands coast until 2030.

Petrofac is responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of both the third (HKZ platform Alpha) and fourth (HKZ platform Beta) substations which have a total contract value of approximately $200 million.

HKZ platform Alpha is scheduled to become operational in 2021, with HKZ platform Beta scheduled to become operational in 2022.

George Salibi, Chief Operating Officer – Engineering & Construction, said, “With the initial stages of the work for HKZ platform Alpha well underway, we are delighted to confirm the option for HKZ platform Beta. This important project integrates our engineering, project management and procurement capabilities and we look forward to the safe and efficient delivery of both platforms for TenneT.”
