Subsea 7 associate Seaway Offshore Cables has won a contract to supply and install array cables for the 12-megawatt Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) projects in the U.S.

"SOC in combination with Subsea 7, has been awarded its first US offshore wind project by Ørsted Wind Power North America who are constructing the project for Dominion Energy. This turnkey cable supply and cable installation contract for CVOW Project marks the continued success of a global renewables strategy for Subsea 7 in the U.S.," said a press release from the German company.

The submarine cable installation, repair and maintenance company said that the multi-million-dollar contract will see SOC, and Subsea 7 operating out of the Gulf of Mexico, perform the turnkey supply and installation of inner array grid cables for the CVOW Project located approximately 43km off the east coast of the U.S.

The CVOW Project includes the development of two, 6-megawatt wind turbines on monopile foundations, which will be connected to the existing onshore grid by submarine cables.

In addition to the submarine cable installation works, SOC will also provide associated materials and services including the supply of the submarine composite cables, cable protection systems and related accessories as well as post-installation termination, trenching and testing services. The project engineering works will commence immediately. The marine installation works are scheduled for execution in 2020.

Welcoming the start of a new era for the business unit in the growing U.S. renewables market, Senior Vice President Renewables and Heavy Lifting, Steph McNeill, said, “Securing this contract has generated great pride within our entire SOC and Subsea 7 project team. This is a significant achievement that marks our continued growth in what we recognize is a crucial market for the world’s future energy needs.

“SOC brings to this project extensive wind farm installation knowledge and capabilities, the same areas of expertise that were used to install jacket foundations and inner array grid cables for 84 wind turbines at Beatrice, Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm. We look forward to start of the project and welcome the opportunity to continue a successful relationship with Ørsted Wind Power.”

SOC will be utilizing partly locally available vessels and resources as well as those with the Subsea 7 group. The project execution will be undertaken by a joint project team of SOC and Subsea 7, to ensure the transfer of know-how and development of local knowledge related to offshore wind and other renewable energy project is offered to customers in the U.S.
