Australia has overtaken Qatar as the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for the first time in November, Reuters reported quoting data from Refinitiv Eikon.

According to the data provided, Australia shipped out 6.7936 million tonnes of LNG in Novemebr, while Qatar exported 6.2025 million tonnes.

The report said that Australia's LNG exports jumped by over 15 percent from the previous month, while Qatar's exports slipped by 3 percent, falling for the first time at this time of the year since 2014.

Earlier, the Resources and Energy Quarterly report for September, published by the Office of the Chief Economistin Australia revealed that Australia is on course to dethrone Qatar as the world's top LNG exporter in 2019 but the outcome is not a foregone conclusion.

Australia's race to the top has been supported by a wave of new LNG projects that started operations in the past year.

Last month, Dr Ibrahim Ibrahim, Economic Adviser at Amiri Diwan, said despite Australia ramping up its production, Qatar will continue to retain the global name. “We will not let them to take over”, Dr Ibrahim, who is also one of the leading energy business minds in the region, said.
