Origin spuds Speculant-1

September 23, 2014

Origin Energy spud the Speculant-1 exploration well on 23 September 2014 in the Otway basin in Victoria/Tasmania, Australia.

The Speculant-1 well is located onshore, approximately 3km off the Great Ocean Road in Nirranda South, about 30km southeast of Warrnambool, Victoria. It is within the near-shore retention lease VIC/RL2(V).

The well is being drilled using the rig Ensign 931.

Origin is using extended reach drilling technology to access offshore gas reservoirs. Total measured depth of the well is being estimated at approximately 3800m.

Origin operates and owns 100% interest in the VIC/RL2(V) prospect.

In August, Origin acquired Karoon Gas’s 40% interest in two offshore exploration permits in Western Australia’s Browse basin for an estimated US$800 million. The acquisition complements Origin's farm-ins in the Cooper and Beetaloo basins and the awarding of new exploration acreage to the company in the Bonaparte basin.
