Wärtsilä Yuchai Engine Co. Ltd, launched its new medium speed engine factory in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province, China.
The facility is approximately 266,700sq m and will be used for the assembly and testing of Wärtsilä 20, Wärtsilä 26 and Wärtsilä 32 medium speed engines.
Wärtsilä Yuchai says the assembly lines and test beds are currently in partial operation, and the plant is expected to be in full production before the end of 2016.
The Wärtsilä 20, Wärtsilä 26 and Wärtsilä 32 engines are known for their fuel efficiency and low levels of exhaust emissions.
Wärtsilä and Yuchai Marine Power Co. Ltd. (YCMP), a subsidiary of Guangxi Yuchai Group, established the 50/50 joint venture in April 2013.
In July, Wärtsilä and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) entered into an agreement to establish a JV for the manufacturing of medium and large bore medium speed diesel and dual-fuel engines.
The factory will be located at Lingang, Shanghai and is expected to have its first engine ready for delivery by the end of 2015. The company is targeting the growing offshore and LNG markets, and the market for very large container vessels.
