Orders reflect lifting fortunes

The order books continue to fill, made up of a broad spectrum of work. John Mueller reports.

The market remains strong and balanced for all types of drilling rigs, with jackups, semisubmersibles and drillships as well as floating production units being ordered and coming into service. Support vessel orders and deliveries are also healthy, comprising multipurpose diving support, platform supply and seismic vessels, crew boats and multi-cargo landing craft.

Huisman, a Dutch-based specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, has installed the largest offshore mast crane in the world onboard the Seven Borealis, a four day task and the most logistically complex by the company.

The crane was transported from the Huisman production facility in Zhangzhou, China using the BigLift Shipping heavy lift cargo vessel Happy Buccaneer to Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore where the installation was accomplished with four lifts of approximately 1000t each, comprising mast base, slewing section, boom and mast.

The crane, in addition to having two 2500t main hoisting blocks, has a 1200t auxiliary hoist equipped with a heave compensator capable of storing up to 6000m of wire.

After final load testing, Seven Borealis will depart for the Huisman production facility in Schiedam, the Netherlands, where a 600t S-lay system will be finalized.

Jasper Investments has exercised an option with Keppel Fels to construct a second KFels Class B jackup drilling rig for $180 million, to be delivered in 1H 2013. The rig will be able to drill to 30,000ft in up to 400ft water depths.

Noble has exercised two of four options with Jurong Shipyard in Singapore for the construction of heavy duty, harsh environment JU3000N jackup drilling rigs at a combined cost of $428 million, bringing to four the total number of new Noble jackups under construction. The Friede & Goldman jackups, enhanced JU2000E designs, will be able to operate in 400ft water depths, drill to 30,000ft and have a hook load capacity of 2.5 million lbs. Deliveries are slated for late-2013/early-2014.

Brazil's Schahin Oil & Gas has taken delivery of the deepwater semisubmersible drilling rig Amazonia, constructed by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore at their yard in Yantai, Shandong Province, China. The second of two such rigs built for Schahin by the yard for operations in Brazil and the Gulf of Mexico, the semi is able to drill to 25,000ft in water depths up to 8000ft.

Fred Olsen Energy of Norway has placed an order with Hyundai Heavy Industriesof South Korea for the construction of an ultra deepwater drillship and secured an option for a second similar ship. Delivery of the 229m long and 12,000ft water depth capable vessel is scheduled for 3Q 2013.

Seadrill has exercised an option to have an ultra-deepwater dual derrick drillship built at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) yard in South Korea at a total project cost estimated at $600 million. Delivery is scheduled for 3Q 2013. The new unit, similar to two drillships Seadrill ordered from SHI in November 2010, will be able to drill in water depths up to 12,000ft and be equipped with a seven ram BOP (blow out preventer) configuration.

Seadrill has also exercised an option to have a drilling tender barge costing $115 million built at COSCO Nantong Shipyard in China. The T17, scheduled for delivery 1Q 2013, will have a lightweight drilling equipment set.

EMAS Production and joint venture partners KSI Production and PetroVietnam Transportation Corporation (PTC) are to take delivery of FPSO Lewek EMAS, a conversion from a 170,000dwt Suezmax tanker by Keppel Shipyard in Singapore. The vessel has been chartered for six years by Premier Oil Vietnam Offshore at a cost of $1 billion for its Chim Sao field, located 300km off Vietnam.

The vessel has an oil productive capacity of 50,000 b/d and storage for 680,000 barrels and can process 89mmscf/d gas.

Petrofac International (UAE) has engaged Keppel Shipyard in Singapore to fast-track upgrade of the FPSO East Fortune, to include refurbishment and life extension works and new topside process modules. Deployment will be to an oil and gas field offshore Peninsular Malaysia. This contract is part of a $190 million order that includes a dive support and construction vessel for SBM Offshore.

Heerema Marine Contractors of Holland is having a $3.3 million refurbishment of its huge semisubmersible crane vessel Hermod carried out by Drydocks World at its yard in Dubai, UAE (pictured below). The 154m long by 86m wide vessel is capable of a tandem lift of 8100t.

SBM Offshore has contracted Keppel Singmarine in Singapore for the design and construction of a multi-purpose diving support and construction vessel (DSCV). The T-6024 design DP3 vessel will be equipped with a 12-man saturation diving system capable of operating in a water depth of up to 300m, a 250t knuckle boom crane and an active heave compensated 150t winch enabling offshore construction and installation work in water depths of up to 1500m. Two ROVs will also be onboard, one work and one observation-class. Delivery is scheduled in 2Q 2013.

Wärtsilä has signed a contract with Nam Cheong Dockyard of Miri, Sarawak, East Malaysia, to build a WSD 800 multi-purpose platform supply vessel, the first in a new series being marketed as a total solution concept, inclusive of all relevant systems. The 82m long vessel includes four gensets producing more than 6MW of electric power for two Wärtsilä main azimuth steerable thrusters aft and two tunnel thrusters forward, as well as all electric power onboard.

The multi-purpose platform supply vessel, scheduled for completion in 3Q 2012, will be owned by Bumi Armada, an owner and operator of offshore support vessels in Malaysia.

Petroleum Geo-Services has ordered two Ramform W-class 3D seismic acquisition vessels from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, deliveries to commence in 2Q 2013. PGS has an option with MHI for two more such vessels. The 104m long diesel electric propelled Ramform W-class has a breadth of 70m that permits deployment of up to 24 hydrophone lines, enabling exploration of a wide area.

Ezra Holdings of Singapore has taken delivery of the anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel Lewek Fulmar, reputedly the world's first UT788 CD multi-functional ultra deepwater AHTS and service vessel with a record breaking bollard pull of 402t, built at Drydocks World Pan-United Shipyard in Singapore.

Vroon Offshore Services of the Netherlands has taken delivery of the VOS Theia, a 59m long AHTS vessel, built at Fujian Shipyard in China and deployed for operations out of Singapore.

JCB Oil & Gas Services of Malaysia has contracted Strategic Marine to provide two 40m crew boats, with an option for two additional vessels, to be delivered late this year from its Singapore shipyard. In addition, Bhagwan Marine of Australia has contracted Strategic Marine to build two multi-cargo landing craft, respectively 49.5m and a 38m in length, for the transfer of building and construction equipment around Dampier, Onslow and Barrow Island, Western Australia, in support of oil and gas development including the Gorgon Project.

Aegean Marine has taken delivery of Tilos, a 5500dwt double-hull bunkering tanker newbuild from Qingdao Hyundai Shipyard in China, deployed to Singapore to support Aegean's bunkering operations there.
